Instant noodles are noodles packed in individual single-portion bags with small sachets of soup powder and condiments. when added to boiling water they are ready to eat in just a few mintes. Ramen noodles are often pre-fried and are the most popular dried variety and come with different flavours, e.g. miso, pork, prawn and shoyu. There are fresh-noodle varieties which are also available in udon and soba noodle form. Popular as snacks, instant noodles are extremely handy for busy people, and when combined with other ingredients, they make a very satisfying main meal.

Instant cup noodles are single portion cups or cartons of pre-fried, dreid noodles with sachets of soup and condiments which are available in a range of different flavours. To prepare cup noodles, you simply add boiling water and wait for three minutes. The most popular of these tasty instant snacks is made with ramen, but udon and soba cup noodles are available. Since you need only an electric kettle and a fork to enjoy them, they are just the thing for the workplace, busy times or `energebcues`.

Although originally from China, the Japanese have adapted the dish of ramen and made it their own. Ramen noodles are made from wheat flour kneaded together with egg, salt and a special type of carbonated water. The noodles come in different styles, the most common being long and cylindrical, but there are also curled and flattened varieties. Ramen noodles are servied in soup, of which there are three basic flavours: soy sauce, salt and miso. Ingredients such as pork, fried vegetables and seaweed are often added. Ramen noodles are also served cold in a summer dish called hiyashi chuka.
