Senbei and arare are traditional snacks that have been consumed in Japan for over 1,200 years.
Senbei are crispy crackers made from Japanese rice.
They are usually flat in shape, and are fried or (traditionally) baked over charcoal, which gives them their distinctive aroma.
There are many varieties of senbei, such as salted, soy sauce flabvoured, with soy beans or nuts mixed in , sugar puffed and norimaki (wrapped in seaweed).
Arare are smaller bite-size versions of senbei, but are made from glutinous rice.
They too come in a variety of flavours and colours.
